Krabi Travel Guide

Krabi was one of those places where I quickly realized I’d need more than a few beach days. The limestone cliffs, turquoise water, hidden temples, island trips, and incredible rock climbing gave me plenty of reasons to get out and explore. I ended up loving the mix of adventure and laid-back beach time, and it’s what made Krabi such a memorable part of my time in Thailand.

In this Krabi Travel Guide, I’m sharing my favorite beaches, islands, and things to do, along with the experiences I think are actually worth making time for.

Quick Answer: Krabi Travel Guide

My Favorite Beaches in Krabi

Phra Nang Beach, Railay

This is the beach that stuck with me more than any other in Thailand, not just Krabi. It sits at the tip of the Railay peninsula, backed by a limestone cliff and a small cave shrine, with clear, calm water that's genuinely good for swimming rather than just photos. Arrive before ten in the morning if you can, since the day-trip boats from Ao Nang start filling the sand not long after.

Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang isn't the prettiest beach in the province, but it's the easiest one to actually use as a base. The sand itself is fine for an evening walk more than serious swimming, and the real draw is the beachfront road behind it, packed with restaurants and the pier for nearly every boat tour in Krabi. I'd treat this beach as a launchpad rather than a destination in itself.

Koh Poda and Chicken Island

These two islands come up on almost every boat tour out of Ao Nang, and for good reason. Koh Poda has wide, powdery white sand and shallow, clear water, while Chicken Island gets its name from a rock formation that genuinely looks like a chicken's head from certain angles. Neither is somewhere you'd stay overnight, but as a stop on a day of island hopping, they're some of the best swimming beaches in the whole province.

Klong Muang and Tubkaek

If Ao Nang feels too busy, this quieter stretch of coast about twenty minutes away is the opposite experience entirely. The beaches here are calmer and less crowded, backed mostly by upscale resorts rather than bars and shops. I'd point families or anyone craving a slower pace here over Ao Nang without much hesitation.

Best Things to Do in Krabi

Island Hopping: 4 Islands Tour vs. Hong Islands Tour

These are Krabi's two signature boat trips, and they're genuinely different experiences rather than variations on the same day. The 4 Islands Tour is the faster-paced, classic option, hopping between Poda Island, Chicken Island, Phra Nang Cave Beach, and the Talay Waek sandbar that connects two islands at low tide.

The Hong Islands Tour travels a bit further out to a single, larger island with an enclosed lagoon at its center and a viewpoint hike with a sweeping panorama over the Andaman Sea. If you only have time for one, pick the 4 Islands Tour for variety or the Hong Islands Tour for a slower, more nature-focused day.

Rock Climbing at Railay

Climbing real limestone at Railay turned into the single best thing I did in Krabi. Half-day beginner courses are widely available, no experience needed, and the setting alone, climbing routes rising directly from the beach with the sea right behind you, makes it worth trying even if you're on the fence. I’ve also written a full Rock Climbing in Krabi guide covering what my first beginner session was actually like, if you want to know what to expect before booking.

Tiger Cave Temple

Wat Tham Suea, better known as Tiger Cave Temple, involves a genuinely tough climb of over a thousand steps up to a golden Buddha statue at the summit. It's not for anyone with knee problems or a fear of heights, since parts of the staircase run right along the cliff edge, but the view over Krabi's jungle and limestone karsts at the top is one of the best in the province. Go early in the morning, both to beat the heat and to catch better light for photos.

Emerald Pool and Blue Pool

Tucked inside Khao Pra Bang Khram Wildlife Sanctuary near Khlong Thom, about an hour from Krabi Town, the Emerald Pool is a genuinely striking natural swimming hole fed by a mineral hot spring, ringed by dense rainforest. A short walk further leads to the Blue Pool, a smaller, deeper pool with even more vivid turquoise water. Both are usually combined with a visit to the nearby hot springs and Tiger Cave Temple as a full-day inland tour.

Kayaking Through Ao Thalane's Mangroves

This one surprised me with how peaceful it was compared to everything else on this list. Ao Thalane, a short drive from Krabi Town, is a network of calm mangrove channels running between towering limestone cliffs, and it's an easy, beginner-friendly paddle even if you've never kayaked before. It's a good half-day option if you want scenery without the crowds of the island boat tours.

Krabi Town Night Market

For something low-key, Krabi Town's night market is worth an evening once you've had your fill of beaches and boat tours. Stalls sell everything from grilled seafood to Thai desserts, and it's a good spot to get a feel for local life away from the resort strips. I'd pair it with a walk along the riverside promenade beforehand.

Best Time to Visit

Krabi is a year-round destination, although the weather changes throughout the year. November through March is the driest and most comfortable period, while April through October is hotter, more humid, and wetter. The rainy season can bring sudden showers, but you’ll also find fewer crowds and often lower prices, making Krabi a good option outside the high season too.

Getting Around In Krabi

A rented scooter is one of the easiest ways to get between beaches, temples, and viewpoints on the mainland, while Grab is a convenient option if you don’t want to drive yourself. In more compact areas like Ao Nang, you can also get around easily on foot, especially if you’re staying close to the beach and main streets. Keep in mind that Railay has no road access at all, so you’ll need a longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town to reach it. Most day-trip boats to the islands leave early, usually between 8 and 9am, so plan your mornings accordingly if you’ve booked a tour.

Practical Tips for Visiting Krabi

  • Get an eSIM: Having mobile data makes getting around, checking maps, booking rides, and keeping in touch much easier. I’d recommend setting up an eSIM before you arrive so you’re connected as soon as you land.

  • Get travel insurance: It’s worth having travel insurance that covers activities you might do in Krabi.

  • Carry cash: Smaller restaurants, local shops, markets, and some beachside spots may still prefer cash, so keep some Thai baht with you.

  • Use Grab: Grab is useful for getting around on the mainland, although availability can vary depending on where you are.

  • Pack for boat trips: A dry bag is useful for keeping your phone, wallet, and other valuables safe from splashes when traveling between islands.

Krabi Travel Guide FAQs

What is the best beach in Krabi?

Phra Nang Beach on the Railay peninsula is my personal favorite, thanks to its calm, clear water and dramatic limestone backdrop. Ao Nang is more convenient as a base, but it's not the prettiest beach in the province.

How many days do you need in Krabi?

Three to four days is a good minimum, enough time for a day at Railay, one boat tour, and a half-day inland trip to Tiger Cave Temple or the Emerald Pool. Five or more days lets you fit in Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi as well.

Which part of Krabi is best to stay?

Ao Nang is a great base for first-time visitors, with plenty of restaurants, shops, beaches, and easy access to boat trips, and Avani Ao Nang Cliff Krabi Resort is a good hotel option. If you prefer staying among dramatic limestone cliffs and beautiful beaches, Railay is a great choice, with Rayavadee Resort being one of the top luxury options.

What's the best time of year to visit Krabi?

Krabi is a year-round destination, with November through March bringing the driest and most comfortable weather for beaches, boat trips, and hiking. The rest of the year can be wetter, but you’ll generally find fewer crowds and lower prices.

Where to stay in Krabi for first-timers?

For first-time visitors, Ao Nang is the easiest base, with plenty of restaurants, shops, beaches, and boat trips to nearby islands. Centara Ao Nang Beach Resort & Spa Krabi is a good option here. If you prefer a more scenic stay, Railay is a great alternative, with Bhu Nga Thani Resort & Villas Railay offering a comfortable stay close to the beach and limestone cliffs.

Final Thoughts

If I'm honest, I went into this trip expecting Krabi to be mostly about beaches, and left thinking of it more as an adventure base with some genuinely beautiful beaches attached. Phra Nang is still the one I'd send anyone straight to, but the rock climbing, the boat trips, and even the steep climb up to Tiger Cave Temple ended up mattering just as much to how I remember the trip. Give yourself more than a couple of days here if you can. Krabi has a way of turning a quick beach stop into a much longer stay than planned.
