It has become one of my favorite islands in Thailand, and I want to help you find an area that feels right for your trip. Quick Answer: Where to Stay in Koh Phangan

Baan Tai and Thong Sala: Best for First-Timers

What It's Like

Thong Sala is the island's main town and ferry port, so it's the most convenient base if you don't want to plan around a scooter ride for every errand. Baan Tai, just next door, has a growing stretch of beachfront hotels and a slightly calmer pace, while still being close enough to Haad Rin and Thong Sala's night market.

The Beaches

Baan Tai's beach isn't the island's most dramatic, but it's calm and swimmable, and it works well as a home base since you're centrally placed for day trips in every direction. It's a practical choice rather than a postcard one, and that's fine for a first visit.

Where to Stay

Luxury – Varivana Resort Koh Phangan, The Centara Collection

A short walk from Hin Kong beach, this resort combines a proper pool with easy access to Thong Sala's shops and restaurants. Imagine spending the morning at the pool, then walking to the night market for dinner without ever needing a scooter.

Mid-range – Baan Manali Resort

Tucked on the quieter Nai Wok Beach, this resort's bungalows sit in a lush tropical garden with private balconies and hammocks. Imagine an afternoon siesta swaying gently in that hammock, coconut trees rustling overhead, just a short walk from Thong Sala's village life.

Budget – Lime N Soda Beachfront Resort

Close to the ferry terminal, Lime N Soda Beachfront Resort offers beachfront accommodation, a nice swimming pool, comfortable rooms, and good value for money.

Srithanu and Hin Kong: Best for Wellness and Sunset Views

What It's Like

Srithanu is Koh Phangan's yoga and wellness hub, and it's where I ended up basing myself. The village runs along the west coast road, packed with smoothie bowls, detox cafes, and yoga studios tucked between palm trees. It never felt loud or chaotic, even at the busiest cafes. Evenings here are slow: people gather along Hin Kong or Zen beach with a drink in hand, waiting for the sun to drop into the sea.

The Beaches

Hin Kong beach is narrow but calm, good for wading rather than serious swimming. A short walk or scooter ride south brings you to Chao Phao, which has softer, more powdery sand and better swimming conditions.

Zen Beach is my favorite nearby, especially around sunset, when people gather on the sand to watch the sun go down and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. All three face west, which is exactly why this stretch of coast is one of the best places on the island for sunsets.

Bonus tip: Devil's Tears, a dramatic cliffside viewpoint near Haad Yao, is a short ride from Srithanu. It's not a swimming beach, so don't plan a beach day around it, but it's one of the best spots on the island to catch sunset over jagged rock formations.

Where to Stay

Luxury – Zee Luxury Boutique Hotel

Picture waking up in a spacious suite with a private balcony, stepping straight out to a pool framed by palms, and knowing your biggest decision of the morning is which yoga class to catch. Zee Luxury Boutique Hotel keeps things understated but comfortable, which fits the whole Srithanu vibe: quiet luxury rather than flashy resort energy.

Mid-range – Sunset Hill Boutique Resort

This is the kind of place where the name isn't marketing spin. Imagine settling into a hillside room with a glass of something cold, watching the sky turn orange over Chao Phao without leaving the property. Guests consistently rave about the views here, and the on-site pool makes it easy to fill a lazy afternoon before the evening show begins.

Budget – Shanti Boutique Hotel

A short walk from Hin Kong beach, Shanti Boutique Hotel gives budget travelers a proper pool and a quiet garden setting without the guesthouse compromises. Imagine spending your days floating in the pool, then wandering five minutes down the road for a fresh coconut and a beach sunset, all without denting your daily budget.

Haad Rin: Best for the Full Moon Party and Nightlife

What It's Like

Haad Rin is the name most people associate with Koh Phangan, mostly because of the Full Moon Party. During the day it can feel oddly sleepy, especially around the half-moon, but the energy builds fast as the date approaches. It's compact, walkable, and stacked with beach bars, tattoo shops, and 24-hour convenience stores.

The Beaches

Haad Rin Nok, the "Sunrise Beach," is a wide crescent of fine white sand facing east, ideal for daytime swimming before the crowds arrive. Haad Rin Nai, the "Sunset Beach," is calmer and quieter, better for an evening walk than a party scene.

Where to Stay

Luxury – Vannee Golden Sands Beachfront Resort

Some rooms here come with their own private plunge pools, which means you can slip straight from bed into warm water without ever putting on shoes. Imagine ending a night out with a quiet swim under the stars, then waking up to a sea view from your own terrace. It's a genuinely elegant option in an area better known for backpacker energy.

Mid-range – Sunset Beach Hotel, Adults Only & Spa

Just steps from the beach, this hotel has an outdoor pool that overlooks the sea, so the party noise from town stays where it belongs. Imagine spending your afternoon poolside with a book, then strolling down for the Full Moon action once the sun sets, all without sharing a wall with the loudest guesthouse on the strip.

Budget – Palita Lodge

A long-running favorite among backpackers, Palita Lodge sits close enough to the action that you can walk home after the party, but far enough that a nap actually feels possible. Simple rooms, a friendly front desk, and a location that saves you a taxi fare are exactly what budget travelers need here

Thong Nai Pan: Best for a Quiet Luxury Beach Stay

What It's Like

Thong Nai Pan sits on the northeast coast and is split between two beautiful bays: the more developed Thong Nai Pan Yai and the quieter Thong Nai Pan Noi. This area is home to an upscale hotel as well as several lovely beach resorts that are often available for under $100 a night. It's peaceful, green, and far less developed than some of the island's busier areas, making it a great choice for a relaxing beach stay.

The Beaches

Both bays have wide stretches of soft, powdery sand backed by coconut palms, and the water is clear enough for easy snorkeling close to shore. It's a completely different terrain from the rockier coves further north.

Where to Stay

Luxury – Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas

Set on beautiful Thong Nai Pan Noi beach, Anantara Rasananda offers a luxurious beachfront stay with private pool villas and direct access to the sand. The villas are surrounded by tropical gardens, while the resort's restaurants, pools, and wellness facilities make it easy to spend the whole day without leaving the hotel. Plus, it has the island’s best spa.

Mid-range – Panviman Resort

Set on a hillside overlooking the bay, Panviman gives you sweeping ocean views from your own balcony. Imagine sipping coffee at sunrise as the light hits the water below, then spending the afternoon at the spa before a private dinner overlooking the coastline. It's the kind of place built for a slow, romantic escape.

Budget – Longtail Beach Resort

Right on Thong Nai Pan Yai beach, this resort keeps you steps from the sand with its own private beach area. Imagine dragging a sun lounger onto the sand in the morning and not moving far from it all day, with the pool as your only backup plan when the sun gets too strong.

Chaloklum and the North Coast: Best for Fishing-Village Charm

What It's Like

Chaloklum is a working fishing village on the northern coast, with colorful longtail boats bobbing along the shore and a genuinely local feel that's harder to find elsewhere on the island. There are enough restaurants, dive shops, and small supermarkets to feel comfortable, but nothing here is built for tourists first.

The Beaches

Chaloklum's own beach is more about boats and village life than sunbathing, but it's the gateway to some of the island's best-kept secrets: Bottle Beach and Haad Kuat are only reachable by boat or a rough scooter track, and both reward the effort with soft sand and turquoise water. Mae Haad, just to the west, has a sandbar that connects to the tiny island of Koh Ma at low tide.

Where to Stay

Luxury – Chaloklum Residences by Kupu Kupu Phangan

Private villas with their own pools give this spot a quiet, secluded feel just steps from Chaloklum Bay. Imagine breakfast served on your own porch beside your private pool, with the sound of fishing boats drifting in from the bay instead of traffic.

Mid-range – Silan Residence

I really like Silan Residence if you want somewhere peaceful with a little more space to relax. The residences feel more like a home than a typical hotel room, and the pool is a nice bonus after a day of exploring the island.

Budget – Red Pearl Beach Resort

A private beach area and outdoor pool make this a comfortable base for exploring the north coast. Imagine spending the morning arranging a boat trip to Bottle Beach, then coming back to cool off in the pool before dinner at one of the village's seafood spots.
