I’ve climbed several of Indonesia’s famous volcanoes, but Mount Rinjani is the one that truly tested me. My legs were exhausted early on, the cold at 3,700 meters caught me completely off guard, and the challenging terrain pushed me further than I expected. But watching the sunrise over the crater lake made every difficult moment worth it. It remains one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had in Indonesia. If you're thinking about taking on Rinjani, here's the Mount Rinjani hike guide, including the latest 2026 updates and regulations.

Why Rinjani Is Considered Indonesia's Toughest Hike

At 3,726 meters, Rinjani on Lombok Island is Indonesia's second-highest volcano, and unlike a half-day sunrise hike such as Bali's Mount Batur, this is a genuine multi-day expedition: volcanic scree, camping at altitude, a midnight summit push in near-freezing temperatures, and terrain remote enough that ground evacuation can take hours. The Indonesian government has explicitly flagged Rinjani as a dangerous mountain given the number of serious incidents in recent years, which is exactly why the rules around it have tightened so much heading into 2026.

Rinjani Trek Routes: Senaru vs Sembalun vs Timbanuh

Before starting the hike, I highly recommend staying in Lombok. You can combine it with a Lombok trip before or after. My Where to Stay in Lombok and Top Things to Do in Lombok guides have you covered.

To start the Rinjani hike, there are three legal starting points, and they suit different goals:

Sembalun

The route most trekkers choose if summiting is the priority. It's a gentler initial approach through savanna terrain, and sleeping in Sembalun village (1,156m) the night before your trek measurably improves summit success by giving you a head start on acclimatization.

Senaru

A steeper, more forested route, often paired with Sembalun as an entry-exit combination (up one way, down the other), which lets you see both landscapes without repeating the same trail.

Timbanuh

The least-used legal route, quieter but with less infrastructure and fewer trekkers to fall in with if something goes wrong. Not the first choice for most visitors.

How Much Does It Cost to Trek Rinjani in 2026?

Rinjani cannot be trekked independently, foreign visitors must book through a licensed operator registered with the Rinjani Trek Management Board. Package pricing typically runs:

If you’ve decided to take on Mount Rinjani, I’d definitely recommend booking your tour in advance! Trust me, you don’t want to show up ready to conquer a volcano only to find out there’s no spot for you!

Rinjani Permits & Registration: The eRinjani System

Every trekker must register through the official eRinjani app or rinjaninationalpark.id before arriving, showing up at the trailhead without a permit is no longer possible, and touts selling "same-day passes" are operating illegally. Registration requires:

  • A valid passport

  • An email address

  • A completed health declaration

  • Your selected route and trek date (both locked once submitted, changing them means cancelling and rebooking)

Register at least 48 hours ahead outside peak season, or 2–4 weeks ahead if you're trekking in July or August, daily quotas fill fast during that window. Foreign trekkers are required to hike with a licensed guide, and as of 2026 the minimum ratio is one guide per four trekkers. Certified guides are additionally mandatory above the crater rim in certain zones. Children under 10 are no longer permitted past Pos 2 on any route, a rule introduced after a serious 2024 incident. As of 2026, valid insurance coverage is also mandatory for every trekker, more on exactly what to look for in the tips section below.

Sample Itinerary: 3D/2N via Sembalun

The most popular package for balancing time and experience:

Day 1: Depart Sembalun village early morning, trek through savanna and forest to the crater rim campsite. Long, steady climbing, roughly 8–9 hours with breaks.

Day 2: Wake before dawn for the summit push, steep volcanic scree in the dark and cold, reaching the peak for sunrise. Descend to the crater rim, then continue down to Segara Anak, the turquoise crater lake, for an afternoon at the natural hot springs. Genuinely one of the best parts of the whole trek, a hot soak after that summit push.

Day 3: Climb out of the crater and descend via Senaru (or back through Sembalun, depending on your route choice), reaching the trailhead by afternoon.

How Hard Is the Rinjani Trek, Really?

Hard. Genuinely, not just "for social media" hard. Batur is a two-hour sunrise walk at 1,717 meters. Rinjani is a multi-day expedition at more than double that altitude, with camping, volcanic scree, and a midnight summit push in temperatures that drop to near 5°C. They are not remotely comparable, and treating Rinjani like a bigger version of Batur is exactly how people end up underprepared. You don’t need to be an elite athlete to complete the Mount Rinjani trek, but you should have a solid level of fitness. Prepare yourself for hiking 7–9 hours a day on steep, challenging terrain.

What to Pack for Rinjani

  • Proper broken-in hiking boots with ankle support

  • Warm layers for summit night, it's genuinely cold, not tropical-cold

  • A headlamp with spare batteries for the midnight push

  • At least 2–3 liters of water capacity, refilled at camp

  • A basic first aid kit and any personal medication

  • Cash for tips and any extras at camp, card machines don't exist on this mountain

Best Time to Trek Rinjani

The park closes annually from January 1 to March 31 for ecosystem recovery and rainy-season safety, so trekking simply isn't possible during that window. Outside of it, the dry season (roughly April through November) is your target, with July and August being the busiest and most competitive for permits. Avoid Eid al-Adha week and Indonesian Independence Day (17 August) specifically, local trekkers fill every available quota slot during those periods.

Tips for Trekking Rinjani

  • Book your operator and permit well ahead of July–August. Daily quotas are real, and last-minute availability during peak season is genuinely rare.

  • Spend a night in Sembalun, Lombok before you start. The altitude head start measurably improves your summit chances.

  • Get proper travel insurance before you land, not at the gate. Standard travel policies often exclude high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation by default, so check the fine print or book a policy built specifically for adventure trekking before you rely on the park's basic coverage.

  • Don't skip the health declaration or medical certificate requirement. It's strictly enforced, and entry will be denied without it.

  • Pack for genuine cold at the summit, more people underprepare for the temperature than for the physical difficulty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mount Rinjani hard to climb? Yes, genuinely. It's a multi-day, high-altitude trek with camping, volcanic scree, and a midnight summit push in near-freezing temperatures, not comparable to a half-day hike like Bali's Mount Batur.

Do I need insurance to trek Mount Rinjani? Yes. As of 2026, valid insurance is mandatory for every trekker, either the park's Basic or Premium option, or verified personal travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.

Can I trek Rinjani without a guide? No. Foreign trekkers must hike with a licensed guide, with a minimum ratio of one guide per four trekkers as of 2026, and certified guides are mandatory above certain sections near the crater rim.

How much does it cost to trek Mount Rinjani? Licensed operator packages typically run $160–395 depending on route and duration, plus a national park entrance fee of IDR 250,000 per person per day.

When is Mount Rinjani closed? The park closes annually from January 1 to March 31 for ecosystem recovery and rainy-season safety. Outside that window, dry season (roughly April to November) is best.

How fit do I need to be to trek Rinjani? You don’t need to be a professional athlete to hike Mount Rinjani (3,726 meters), but a decent level of fitness is essential. The trek requires strong legs, good stamina, and enough endurance to manage around 7-9 hours of steep uphill hiking each day.

Final Thoughts

Rinjani is not a bigger Batur, and treating it that way is the most common mistake I see people make. It's a genuine expedition, tough, cold, and remote, and it demands real preparation, a licensed operator, and proper insurance before you even reach the trailhead. It's also, without question, worth every bit of that effort. Watching the sun come up over Segara Anak after a night on volcanic scree is a feeling I still haven't found anywhere else.
