Gili Islands Travel Guide: Which Island Is Best for You?
TRAVEL
8/21/2026

I've been to the Gili Islands a handful of times now, and each visit I've come away enjoying something different about each one. Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno sit within sight of each other, but they feel like completely different places once you're actually standing on the sand. Most people default to Gili Trawangan out of habit. It's the name everyone's heard without realizing the other two islands might actually suit their trip better. So here's my honest Gili Islands travel guide, based on what each island is actually like once you're there.
If you're thinking of adding Lombok to your itinerary, check out my Where to Stay in Lombok and Top Things to Do in Lombok guides.
Gili Trawangan: Best for Nightlife & Variety
Gili Trawangan, usually just called Gili T, is the largest and busiest of the three, and by far the most developed. The widest range of restaurants, dive shops, beach bars, and bike rentals on any of the Gilis, plus the most reliable transport connections in and out. If you want your island stay to feel active and social, with plenty of options close together, this is the obvious pick. I have also started my Gili Islands trip from here
It's not purely a party island either, quiet sunrise beaches and relaxed restaurants exist here too, just alongside a genuinely lively strip once the sun goes down. The trade-offs: it's the most crowded of the three. Especially July through August, the east coast reef has taken real damage from boat traffic over the years, and noise carries at night, so light sleepers should book away from the main strip.
Top Things to Do in Gili Trawangan - My Favourite Activities
Cycle around the island — there are no cars or motorbikes on Gili T, so biking the coastal path (about an hour to circle the whole island) is one of the best ways to see it.
Watch sunset from the west coast — head to Sunset Point for beanbags, beach bars, and some of the best sunsets in Indonesia.
Try a dive course — Gili T is known as a great, beginner-friendly place to get PADI certified thanks to calm currents and nearby dive sites.
Explore the night market — good for cheap, tasty local food and a break from the beach clubs.
Check out the nightlife — Gili T is the "party island" of the Gilis, with beach bars, DJ sets, and live music every night.
Where to stay in Gili Trawangan
The Beach House Resort
A beachfront boutique resort tucked near Gili Trawangan Hill, offering two pools, a swim-up bar, and live music nightly. Rooms range from garden-view doubles to private plunge-pool suites, and the on-site restaurant is known for fresh seafood and BBQ with views toward Mount Rinjani. Steps from Turtle Point snorkeling and a short walk to the ferry terminal, shops, and bars.
Vamana Resort
A relaxed beachfront resort just a minute's walk from the sand, with Balinese-style rooms, an outdoor pool, and a restaurant serving sea-view dining. It's close to a popular snorkeling spot right out front, near the island's turtle beach, and within easy reach of the night market and Sunset Point
Gili Air: Best for a Balanced Stay
Gili Air sits in the middle, geographically and in atmosphere, enough cafes, beach bars, and mild nightlife to keep things interesting, without Trawangan's noise or crowd. If you asked me where I'd actually want to spend a full week, this is the honest answer. It splits the difference between Gili T's energy and Gili Meno's isolation in a way that works for almost anyone, whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, or with family.
The main accommodation hub clusters around the ferry terminal on the south side, with pricier resorts scattered along the coast and a handful of cheaper options up north
Top Things to Do in Gili Air
Snorkel right off the beach — Gili Air has some of the easiest, most accessible snorkeling in the Gilis, no boat needed for many spots.
Cycle around the island — a flatter, quieter ride than Gili T, with fewer crowds and more local village life to see along the way.
Relax at a laid-back beach bar — the vibe here sits between Gili T's party scene and Gili Meno's total quiet, easygoing but still social.
Try stand-up paddleboarding — calm waters make it a great spot for beginners.
Enjoy the local village atmosphere — Gili Air has a more authentic, lived-in feel than Gili T, with real neighborhoods alongside the tourist strip.
Watch sunset over Bali's Mount Agung — Gili Air has some of the best unobstructed sunset views across the strait toward Bali.
Where to stay in Gili Air
Divino Gili Air
A stylish 4.5-star beach hotel steps from Gili Air's main dock, with a full-service spa, outdoor pool, and on-site restaurant and coffee shop. Rooms range from deluxe doubles to a spacious Royal Suite, making it a solid pick whether you're after a quick getaway or a longer, more comfortable stay.
Mowies On The Beach
A beachfront bed & breakfast on Gili Air's quieter west side, known for its restaurant, sunset views, and reserved beach loungers right on the sand. Rooms come with private terraces and hot-tub bathrooms, and the property sits close to Gili Air Swings and the harbor, making it easy to settle in and explore the island by bike.

Gili Meno: Best for Quiet & Romance
The smallest and most peaceful of the three, and it hasn't tried to compete with its neighbors on nightlife or variety, which is exactly its appeal. Shops, bars, and restaurants exist, but the range is genuinely limited compared to Gili Trawangan or Air. One standout attraction: the Bask Nest Sea Sculptures, an underwater art installation a few hundred meters off the west coast, worth a snorkel out to see.
Getting here takes an extra step too, the main fast boat service from Bali doesn't stop at Meno directly, so you'll need a smaller boat transfer from Gili T or Gili Air. Time genuinely moves differently once you're here, which is either exactly what you want from a trip or not, depending on what you're after.
Top Things to Do in Gili Meno
Snorkel at the Meno Wall — one of the best coral reef spots in the Gilis, known for turtles and calm, clear water.
Visit the Meno Wall statues — an underwater sculpture trail similar to Gili T's, but far less crowded.
Relax at Turtle Sanctuary — a small conservation center where you can see baby turtles up close.
Walk or cycle the coastline — Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest of the three, so it's easy to explore on foot or by bike in under an hour.
Watch sunset from the west side — with barely any crowds, it's one of the most peaceful sunset spots in the Gilis.
Visit the salt lake — a small, quirky inland lake in the middle of the island worth a quick stop.
Do nothing at all — Gili Meno's biggest draw is genuinely just slowing down; it has the fewest bars, shops, and crowds of the three islands.
Where to stay in Gili Meno
BASK Gili Meno
A luxury beachfront resort right by Gili Meno's famous underwater sculpture park, with a 35-metre infinity pool, private-pool suites, multiple restaurants, and a beach club. It's built for slow mornings and quiet luxury, ideal for travelers wanting a higher-end stay on Gili Meno's peaceful side.
MAHAMAYA Gili Meno
A private-beach resort with two outdoor pools and beachfront dining, featuring free beach cabanas and sun loungers for relaxed island days. A good option for travelers looking to combine comfort with Gili Meno's laid-back, low-crowd atmosphere.
Quick Decision Guide: Which Gili Island Fits You?
Want nightlife, restaurants, and dive centers? Choose Gili Trawangan.
Want the best all-around balance without going remote? Choose Gili Air.
Want quiet, romance, and a genuine escape? Choose Gili Meno.
Not sure and it's your first visit? Base yourself on Gili Trawangan or Gili Air and take a boat tour to the other islands, or simply split your stay to explore both.
Diving is your main priority? Trawangan has the most dive operators, though Air offers calmer conditions and still solid access.
How Much Does It Cost to Stay on Each Gili Island?
Gili Trawangan runs the widest range, but usually you can easily find affordable accommodations, even cheaper than Bali. Budget rooms with fans and shared bathrooms from roughly IDR 200,000–400,000 a night, mid-range private bungalows with AC and pool access around IDR 600,000–1,500,000, and beachfront villas with private pools from IDR 2,000,000 and up. Gili Air and Gili Meno generally sit a touch below Trawangan for comparable quality, one more reason Air appeals to travelers who want comfort without Trawangan's premium.
How to Get to the Gili Islands
From Bali, fast boats depart from Padang Bai and Amed on the east coast, arriving at Gili Trawangan or Gili Air in roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the operator and sea conditions. Morning crossings tend to be calmer and more reliable, afternoon departures run a higher chance of choppy water and delays. From Lombok's mainland, boats leave from Bangsal Harbour near Senggigi.
Getting to Gili Trawangan from Bali:
Padang Bai (East Bali): the quickest crossing, around 1.5 hours by fast boat — best if you're staying in Ubud or East Bali.
Serangan Harbor (South Bali): about 2 to 2.5 hours, and just 20-30 minutes from Kuta, Seminyak, or the airport — a convenient option for South Bali travelers.
Sanur Harbor (South Bali): roughly 2 to 3 hours, ideal if you're based in Kuta or Seminyak and want a quieter, more modern port.
Public ferry: the budget option, but it can take up to 5 hours or more, often requiring extra land and sea transfers — only worth it if fast boats are canceled or you're on a tight budget.
Getting to Gili Trawangan from Lombok:
Fast/speedboat from Teluk Nare or Bangsal: the quickest and most popular option, taking just 10 to 20 minutes.
From Senggigi: slightly longer, around 30 minutes by fast boat.
Public ferry from Bangsal: the cheapest option, but much slower, usually 1.5 to 2 hours since boats wait to fill up before departing.
For most travelers, the fast boat is the way to go from either island, it's faster, more comfortable, and cuts out the hassle of connecting transfers. Just remember to build in extra time getting to the harbor, especially from South Bali, since traffic can eat into your total travel time.
Getting Between the Gili Islands
Small boat transfers run regularly between all three islands, though Gili Meno isn't served by the main fast boat routes from Bali, so reaching it usually means routing through Trawangan or Air first. If diving is a priority alongside a quieter base, pairing Trawangan and Air, using one for activities and the other for sleeping, is a genuinely practical combination.
Money & Practical Tips
Gili Trawangan has reliable ATMs, the easiest of the three islands for accessing cash. However, during peak seasons, ATMs can run out of cash, so make sure to bring some cash with you.
Gili Air has decent card and QR code payment adoption at cafes and restaurants.
Gili Meno runs almost entirely on cash. Withdraw more than you think you'll need before heading over, there's no real fallback once you're there.
All three islands are motor-vehicle-free. Transport is by foot, bicycle, or horse cart, factor that into how much luggage you bring.
Water refill stations are widely available across all three islands. Bring a reusable bottle rather than relying on single-use plastic, waste processing infrastructure here is limited.
Should You Visit More Than One Gili Island?
If you have the time, yes. The islands sit close enough together that day-tripping from your base to another is genuinely easy, snorkel a quieter reef from Meno, or catch Trawangan's sunset scene for an evening even if you're sleeping on Air. Trying to see all three properly in a couple of days is a mistake though, each island rewards actually slowing down rather than rushing through, especially Meno.

Final Thoughts
The Gili Islands look nearly identical from a distance, and feel completely different once you've actually spent a night on each. Choose Trawangan for energy, Air for balance, or Meno for genuine quiet, and if you're still unsure, Air is the answer that works for almost everyone. Whatever you pick, give the island real time rather than rushing through, that's when these three actually earn their reputation.
