Best Time to Visit Hong Kong: A Month-by-Month Guide
TRAVEL
Hong Kong's subtropical climate means the city experiences real seasonal swings: hot, humid summers, mild and comfortable winters, and a distinct typhoon season in between. The "best" time to visit really depends on what you want out of the trip: comfortable sightseeing weather, lower hotel prices, or a specific festival.
That said, the best month for you will depend on what matters most: weather, prices, crowds, or festivals. If you're planning your first trip, you can also check out my guides on where to stay in Hong Kong and the top things to do in Hong Kong to help plan the rest of your trip.
Here’s what to expect throughout the year.
January
January is one of the nicest months to explore Hong Kong. Temperatures are usually around 18°C (64°F) during the day and can drop to around 14°C (57°F) at night, so you'll want a light jacket, especially in the evenings.
The cooler temperatures and lower humidity make this a great time for walking around the city and getting out on the hiking trails. It's also a popular time to visit, so I'd recommend booking your accommodation ahead of time.
February
February is still cool and comfortable, although the weather can be a little more unpredictable. You might get sunny days, cloudy skies, or the occasional colder spell.
One of the biggest reasons to visit around this time is Chinese New Year. Depending on the lunar calendar, it falls between late January and mid-February and brings fireworks, lion dances, flower markets, and a completely different energy to the city.
Just keep in mind that some local businesses close for a few days during the holiday, so check opening hours if you're visiting during the celebrations.
March
March feels like the beginning of spring, with temperatures generally reaching the low-to-mid 20s°C. It's still comfortable enough for long days of sightseeing, although humidity starts creeping back in.
You may also notice more mist and drizzle, which can sometimes make views from places like Victoria Peak less clear. Still, it's a good month to visit if you want pleasant temperatures without the busiest winter crowds.
April
April is warm without being too hot, although humidity and rainfall start to increase. Temperatures usually sit in the low-to-mid 20s°C, making it a comfortable month for exploring the city.
I’d consider April a good shoulder-season option. You can enjoy outdoor activities without the intense summer heat, and accommodation prices can be more reasonable than during the busiest winter periods.
May
By May, you can definitely feel summer arriving. Temperatures regularly reach the high 20s°C, and the humidity can make it feel considerably hotter.
Rain also becomes more frequent, so I'd pack a small umbrella and something light for sudden showers. You can still have a great trip, but don't expect the cool, crisp weather you get earlier in the year.
June
June is when Hong Kong's hot and rainy season really gets going. Temperatures can reach the low 30s°C, and the humidity can make walking around during the middle of the day feel exhausting.
Typhoon season also begins around this time and runs roughly through November. Storms aren't necessarily going to affect your trip, but it's worth keeping an eye on the forecast and having some flexibility in your plans.
July
July is hot, humid, and rainy — definitely not my first choice if you want to spend most of your trip outdoors. Temperatures often reach above 31°C (88°F), while humidity can regularly sit above 80%.
If you do visit in July, I'd plan your days around the weather. Explore early in the morning, take a break somewhere air-conditioned during the hottest part of the day, and save your outdoor plans for later in the afternoon or evening.
August
August continues the same hot and humid pattern, and it's right in the middle of typhoon season. Tropical storms can occasionally cause disruptions to flights, ferries, and outdoor activities, so flexibility is important.
The upside is that accommodation can be cheaper than during the peak winter months. If you're traveling on a budget and don't mind dealing with the heat and occasional rain, August can still work.
September
September is still very much a summer month, especially at the beginning. Expect heat, humidity, rain, and a continued chance of typhoons.
Things gradually start to improve towards the end of the month, though. If you're visiting in late September, you may start to notice slightly more comfortable temperatures and less intense humidity.
October
October is one of my favorite times to visit Hong Kong. The humidity drops, temperatures become much more comfortable, and the risk of typhoons starts to decrease.
With temperatures generally sitting in the mid-20s°C, it's a great time to explore the city, spend time outdoors, and tackle some of Hong Kong's famous hiking trails. It's also a popular month for visitors, so don't leave accommodation until the last minute.
The Mid-Autumn Festival can also fall around September or October, depending on the lunar calendar, bringing lanterns, celebrations, and plenty of mooncakes.
November
November is another excellent month for Hong Kong. Temperatures usually stay around 20–24°C (68–75°F), humidity is low, and rainfall is relatively limited.
This is probably one of the best months if you want to combine city sightseeing with hiking. The weather is comfortable enough to spend an entire day outside without dealing with the intense heat of summer.
December
December brings cooler, dry weather and plenty of festive energy. Temperatures are generally in the high teens to low 20s°C, so you'll want a light jacket, particularly in the evenings.
The city looks especially good around Christmas, with huge light displays and decorations around Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. It's a great time to experience Hong Kong's festive side, but keep in mind that Christmas and New Year's bring more visitors and higher hotel prices.
Quick Takeaways
Best overall weather: October to early December, plus January and February.
Best for lower prices: May to September, although you'll need to be comfortable with heat, humidity, rain, and possible typhoons.
Best for hiking: October, November, January, and February when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable.
Best for festivals: Chinese New Year in late January or February, and the Mid-Autumn Festival in September or October.
Months I'd avoid for outdoor-heavy trips: July and August, mainly because of the heat, humidity, and higher chance of typhoons.
