Sanur doesn't get the hype Canggu or Seminyak do, but you'd be surprised by the abundance of activities. Sanur has more beaches than Canggu, plenty of beachfront fish restaurants, and honestly, I quite liked surfing here too. There's a variety of spots for different levels, and you get to surf with a great view. Moreover, Sanur also has plenty of water activities on offer, like jet skiing, banana boat rides, and parasailing.

This best hotels in Sanur guide covers the top hotels in Sanur across every budget. Plus everything there's actually to do once you're there.

Is It Worth Staying in Sanur, Bali?

Yes, if you know what you're actually looking for. Sanur is Bali's calmest, most walkable beach town, which is rare in Bali. A 5-kilometer beachfront promenade, reef-protected swimming that's genuinely safe for kids, and some of the best sunrise views on the island thanks to its east-facing coast. It's best suited to families, multi-generational trips and anyone who wants a relaxed base with easy access to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan's ferry port.

It's not the right fit for everyone though. If you're chasing a big nightlife scene, Sanur will feel too quiet, Canggu or Seminyak suit that trip far better. Sanur's strength is specifically its lack of chaos, not a limitation, but worth knowing before you book.

Best Activities in Sanur, Bali

  • Walk or cycle the beachfront promenade. A flat, paved 5-kilometer stretch running from Sanur down toward Mertasari, the best dedicated walking and cycling path on the island.

  • Take a day trip to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. Sanur's harbor is the main departure point, making it the most convenient mainland base for exploring these islands.

  • Swim at one of Sanur's connected beaches. What looks like one long beach is actually a string of smaller ones, Sindhu, Segara Ayu, Karang, Semawang, and Mertasari, each with a slightly different feel, and the reef offshore keeps the water calm.

  • Visit the Sindhu morning fish market. An early, genuinely local scene, fishermen bringing in the day's catch on traditional jukung boats.

  • Take a surf lesson or boat out to Sanur's surf breaks. Less famous for it than Canggu, but Sanur has its own reef breaks with a range of levels, and you get to surf with a proper view of the coastline.

  • Play padel. Sanur has its own dedicated padel scene now, part of Bali's wider boom in the sport, a good option if you want an active morning before a slow beach afternoon. If you are into padel check out my Bali Padel Guide.

  • Book a spa afternoon. Sanur's hotels lean heavily into wellness, with some genuinely excellent spa programs attached to the bigger resorts.
